According to Prof Tim S Nawrot, who led the study, the figures above do not indicate the amount of increase in actual risk. For example, increasing the risk of heart attack due to cocaine use is actually bigger than the air pollution, but because not too many cocaine users compared to people affected by pollution then the only bit that had a heart attack because of cocaine.
"Increasing the slightest risk, such as air pollution, can have a major impact if the impact is very widespread in a population," said Prof. Nawrot told HealthDay, Thursday (24/02/2011).
The high case of heart attack due to air pollution shows how very falt concerned about the current levels of pollution. One of the solution is to impose a ban on smoking in public places, which is claimed could reduce the number of cases of heart attack by 17 percent.
